Sunday Girls

On October 25 1984, an afternoon for three girls takes a thrilling and rather mystical turn after following a peculiar boy into the surrounding forest of their college town.

Sunday Girls is a magical realism folk thriller. The root of creation for me comes from traditional storytelling and tangible creation. The frame of this story was captured on 16mm film paying respects not only to the art, care, & diligence that goes into analogue filmmaking, but also the films of the 20th century that inspire my filmmaking. Sunday Girls is a period piece set in 1984 and while this story explores current discourses around womanhood, it is a story old as time - one my mother and ancestors can and could relate to. As an Irish descendant with a fascination in exploring the human condition through magical realism and mystical motifs, Sunday Girls is an amalgamation of Irish & Celtic folk characters and themes. Some of those references include Reynardine, the Celtic Sisters Knot, the Púca, the Banshee, the Tuatha Dé Danann, Lady Fanshawe, and the tradition of Samhain. This short film reads as a fantastical, unsettling, and in some ways Lynchian modern telling of folk fables from Ireland. It explores the concept of magical realism and fantastical fiction through 16mm and whimsical nostalgia. As nostalgia is something this generation of audiences seek, I hope for Sunday Girls to nourish this  yearning with a little magic.
